Louisville Paving and Construction Our History
1919

Family-owned, Louisville Paving and Construction’s story begins a century ago. After working in the coal industry, a second-generation Irish immigrant, Joseph Michael Dougherty, took a leap of faith: he formed the Dougherty Coal Company. His son, Joseph Thomas Dougherty, joined the family business soon after, striving to honor his family’s leadership and legacy.

Fresh out of Notre Dame, Jack Dougherty saw a bigger vision for his family’s fleet of coal delivery trucks. In 1949, he advised his father to invest in paving equipment, and the Louisville Paving Company was born.

By 1959, Jack inspired his younger brother, Bill Dougherty, to join the rapidly thriving business. When natural gas took over coal in 1967, the Doughertys adapted immediately, switching their full focus to asphalt paving.

The Company installed its third and final plant at the Charlton Street location. It was one of four plants the company operated during the decade. Jack’s son, John, who joined the company in 1978, became more involved in the Company’s plants and equipment as the decade progressed. He also founded the company’s Site Division in 1986 with the goal of becoming a one-stop shop for developers.

Material Transfer and Pace Contracting start during this decade. Bill’s son, Joe, came in 1991 after graduating from Notre Dame. Next, Doug Wood joined the Company, who would later take over and grow the Site Division. His brother, Tom Wood, started Pace Contracting in 1997 and has been President since its inception. At the turn of the century, Louisville Paving and subsidiaries were organized under the holding company, LPX, Inc. New energetic leaders also joined during this time. Bluegrass Testing Laboratory was founded in 2014 with the goal of becoming a premier material design and testing facility. The decade also marked the beginning of a fifth generation of family involvement when Hunter Strickler began his career with the Company.
